He began his investigative career in the U.S. Navy as a Master-At-Arms with assignments as Military Chief of Police at NAF Midway Island, Canine Handler and Investigator with Narcotics Interdiction Teams Pacific, and Chief Investigator at the Naval Administrative Command, San Diego, California. He was a Sergeant with the Bremerton Police Department in Washinton State. He retired in 2004 as a Peace Officer from the California Department of Corrections serving as a Correctional Officer, State Parole Agent, and Correctional Counselor in the Litigation Office.
After retiring from CDC he obtained a license as a Private Investigator through the California Bureau of Investigative Services and was on the Board of Directors for the California Association of Licensed Investigators from 2007 to 2010. In August 2020, Graham McGruer moved away from California and became established in Bruceville-Eddy applying for a license with the State of Texas as a Private Investigator.
